What’s New in Primavera P6 26.10 and What Construction Schedulers Need to Know

The Primavera P6 26.10 software update is now available, offering several enhancements designed to streamline project management for construction schedulers.

Oracle’s Primavera P6 is among the most-used project scheduling and management platforms in the construction industry. Construction scheduling software like Primavera P6 is critical for overseeing the extensive amounts of data associated with one or more projects. From managing the cost of materials, labor, and equipment, to tracking employee timesheets, receiving data from subcontractors and other stakeholders, and identifying potential bottlenecks, the program can help keep projects on schedule and within budget.

The Primavera P6 26.10 software update is not a complete overhaul of the program. Rather, it involves enhancements to scheduling efficiency, data transparency, and team collaboration. In an industry as complex as construction, where projects involve so many moving parts, even relatively small software updates can make a significant difference for project managers and schedulers.

Read on to learn about three improvements included in Primavera P6 26.10.

1 – More Accurate Baseline Comparisons

Project schedules can contain hundreds of individual activities and associated data points. For commercial construction projects, this information may include target start and completion dates for the overall project and individual activities, as well as milestones ranging from site approval and excavation to foundation and floor construction, inspections, electrical work, plumbing, and more. As a project progresses, schedulers may need to update these activities by adding or deleting tasks, modifying existing ones, or merging activities.

With so much information to manage, it’s easy for discrepancies or missing data to go unnoticed.

In Primavera P6, approved project schedules are referred to as “baselines.” They also allow project managers to compare the original approved schedule against actual project progress. The 26.10 update introduces new baseline-matching fields, which allow users to recognize activities that may be missing from their baselines.

The update includes the following baseline management fields:

  • BL Project Match: Identifies whether an activity exists in the assigned project baseline.
  • BL1 Match: Checks whether an activity exists in the primary user baseline.
  • BL2 Match: Checks the secondary user baseline.
  • BL3 Match: Checks the tertiary user baseline.

Identifying missing activities gives schedulers greater visibility into potential discrepancies, helping them better manage project timelines and performance reporting. These fields are populated automatically and are automatic and present as read-only fields.

2 – More Control Over XER and XML Imports

Schedulers regularly import files throughout the course of construction projects. Files in XER and XML formats may come from subcontractors, general contractors, project owners, and other stakeholders. The information contained in these files must then be incorporated into the existing master schedule.

For example, if a construction company has 500 activities in its master schedule and a window subcontractor sends a file containing 50 additional activities, the scheduler must determine how to incorporate these activities into their existing project schedule.

The importance of having control over this process comes down to risk. Data can be inadvertently overwritten, duplicated, or lost during imports. Schedulers may also spend considerable time manually correcting and updating information throughout the course of a project.

In Primavera P6 26.10, project schedulers have greater control over how XER and IML files are imported into the program.

Schedulers can now choose from three approaches when importing these files:

  1. Replace an existing project
  2. Add to an existing project
  3. Create a new project

In Primavera P6, WBS stands for “work breakdown structure.” WBS provides a hierarchical way of organizing project activities into manageable sections. Primavera P6 26.10 can identify duplicate projects using Project ID and Object ID, allowing users to incorporate the WBS hierarchy and activities from an imported file into an existing project.

These enhancements give schedulers more flexibility when incorporating information from multiple stakeholders, while also helping reduce the risk of data inconsistencies and unnecessary manual work.

3 – More Team Member Collaboration

Team members need to communicate clearly about who is responsible for specific project activities. When task ownership is unclear, activities may fall behind schedule, deadlines may be extended, and important project updates may be overlooked.

The Primavera P6 26.10 update improves transparency around activity ownership through two key enhancements:

  1. Team members can receive email notifications when they are added or removed as the owner of an activity.
  2. Team members can assign themselves as activity owners through P6 Team Member Web. When permitted, team members can also reassign activities to other eligible owners.

In Primavera P6, activity owners are the individuals responsible for providing updates on specific project activities. For example, one team member may be responsible for reporting progress on structural steel installation, while another may oversee updates related to roofing.

Previously, team members were not automatically notified when they were added or removed as activity owners. Such an issue could create gaps in communication and project reporting, particularly when responsibilities changed during construction.

The 26.10 update helps address this issue by keeping team members informed about changes in activity ownership. It also allows team members with the appropriate permissions to assign themselves as activity owners without having to rely on manager to make the change.

Together, these improvements can help construction teams establish clearer responsibilities, improve accountability, and maintain more accurate project updates.
